Preview: Richard Carpenter’s Close To You

By Steve Wright  Tuesday Jul 25, 2017

Just before it heads up to the Edinburgh Fringe, here’s your chance to catch this new comedy musical show from one half of ace musical comedy duo Frisky & Mannish.

He used to be on top of the world looking down on creation, to the left of (and slightly behind) Karen. Now Richard Carpenter is back, and solitaire’s the only game in town.

A multi-talented musician, composer, arranger, orchestrater, producer and engineer – the only thing he doesn’t usually get to do is sing lead. So, where do we go from here? Buckle up for a razor-sharp parody play that takes you on the ultimate ticket to ride.

A bittersweet dark comedy, full to the brim with spoof Carpenters song pastiches, telling the hilariously tragic yet ultimately uplifting tale of pop music’s premier control freak. Virtuosic renditions of the Carpenters’ catchiest tunes nestle amongst harrowing scenes of psychological torment in this new dark comedy written and performed by Matthew Floyd Jones, the piano player from Frisky & Mannish.

“This parody show is not affiliated with Richard Carpenter in any way,” Matthew explains. “It is a work of fiction inspired by his legacy and intended with love. And if birds suddenly appear, well, that’s just a coincidence.”

“Wildly talented.” The Independent on Frisky & Mannish

“Hugely entertaining.” The Guardian on Matthew Floyd Jones’ Cabariot
