Review: Horrible Histories Live on Stage: Terrible Tudors, Bristol Hippodrome
I never thought I would witness my four-year-daughter dancing in her seat at the Bristol Hippodrome while learning about the Tudor line of succession.
But that’s the magic of Horrible Histories: a popular series of books by author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown which is soon getting its first feature film release following a CBBC series and theatre productions.
The magic is being able to introduce children to all sorts of historical eras while keeping things fun. The blood, guts, gore and poo jokes of the books help – and these have all been translated to the stage show.
is needed now More than ever
Terrible Tudors is the first of two Horrible Histories shows coming to the Hippodrome this week, with the same trio of actors from Birmingham Stage Company also performing Awful Egyptians.
The spirit of the show – despite executions, hangings and burnings at the stake – is always lighthearted, with even more fun in the second half thanks to 3D glasses which take the audience on board a ship during the successful defeat of the Spanish Armada.
History has never been so fun.
Horrible Histories: Live on Stage is at Bristol Hippodrome until July 27.
