Ten years of MAYK celebrated in new video

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Dec 21, 2021

“When we set up MAYK we didn’t start with a plan really, we started with a desire for us to work with artists in the way we currently work with artists. It felt like a thing to do in that moment.”

MAYK co-founder Matthew Austin is speaking at the start of a video made to mark ten years of one of Bristol’s most brilliant artistic organisations.

MAYK’s major project is the biennial festival Mayfest, Bristol’s international festival of contemporary theatre, returning in 2022, which over its existence has created some of the most memorable shows the city has ever seen.

“It sort of was about curiosity,” adds MAYK’s other co-founder, Kate Yedigaroff.

“And I think that there was a sort of unsaid thing between us that we’ll do this until the curiosity goes, so what happens if we take this risk?”

Made by Dan Canham with film footage by Timothy X Atack, Paul Blakemore, Dan Canham, Phoebe Holman, Max McClure, Jack Offord and Jon Stephenson, the work featured in the video gives just a fleeting glimpse of ten years of MAYK:

  • Sanctum – Theaster Gates/ Situations

  • 30 Cecil Street – Dan Canham
  • Dark Land Light House – Sleepdogs
  • The Secret Slowness of Movement – Laura Dannequin
