Largely Bristol-based cast to feature in Oliver Twist at Tobacco Factory Theatres
In the wake of last year’s smash-hit show The Snow Queen, Tobacco Factory Theatres will be bringing Oliver Twist to its main space for its Christmas show in 2023.
The story follows an orphan boy as he escapes the workhouse and finds himself drawn into the world of Fagin and his merry band of pickpockets.
Charles Dickens’ early 19th century classic may not normally be associated with ‘the most wonderful time of the year’, but this seasonal adaptation of the tale of young Oliver promises to be “a brighter and bigger production”, leaving audiences not only thrilled, but full of festive cheer.
is needed now More than ever
The show has been written by Olivier Award-winning Bristol playwright Adam Peck (A Monster Calls), and will be directed by Heidi Vaughan, the new TFT artistic director, with music from composer and multi-instrumentalist Seamas Carey.
The trio have worked together before – most recently for Travelling Light’s Belle and Sebastien, the acclaimed family Christmas show at Bristol Old Vic’s Weston Studio in 2022.
Following an open casting call for local actors, auditions have now taken place, and the production will feature a majority Bristol-based ensemble.

Cast (l-r): Beverly Rudd (Fagin), Tom Fletcher (Dodger/Monks/Martha), Dan Gaisford (Bill Sykes/Judge Fang), Alice Barclay (Mrs Brownlow/Mrs Sowerberry), Shiquerra Roberston Harris (Nancy/Agnes), Defender Nyanhete (Oliver) – photo: Camilla Adams
Oliver Twist (age recommendation 7+) is at Tobacco Factory Theatres from December 1-January 21 2024 at 7pm, with some additional matinee shows. Tickets are available at www.tobaccofactorytheatres.com.
