The benefits of diversity in the boardroom

By Safiya Bashir  Monday Nov 8, 2021

For a city that celebrates and champions diversity, we need to make sure that this extends to our workforce and boardrooms.

There’s still a long way to go for Bristol and the rest of the UK. According to data from Company Matters, 96 per cent of the directors of firms listed on the AIM and 95 per cent of the FTSE 100 are white. When it comes to gender, there is still a high imbalance. Of the FTSE 100, only eight per cent of CEOs are women.

Ahead of our free virtual panel event exploring how we can make Bristol’s boardrooms more diverse, we discuss how exactly this is beneficial for our city, population and companies.

Diversity of thought

By having a diverse boardroom, you will also have a diverse range of experiences, backgrounds and opinions. Having a range of thought will also mean a wider range of comprehensive ideas, solutions, and strategies.

Increased revenues

A report by McKinsey and Co found that companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35 per cent more likely to have better financial returns than their non-inclusive competitors.

Diversity in the boardroom better reflects customers, shareholders and clients

An organisation’s boardroom should be representative of those using its services. That’s why a board is there after all. Having a boardroom that reflects shareholders and customers are more likely to feel their interests and needs are being met.
