Bristol24/7 Presents: What actionable steps local businesses can take to become more sustainable / Sustainability

Why all businesses should be going green

By Safiya Bashir  Tuesday Jan 18, 2022

We’re living in a climate crisis and that’s not easy to ignore.

According to research, 2021 was the fifth hottest year on record. Despite its more prominent agenda in Bristol, climate change continues to be intensifying across the world leading to permanent damage to ecosystems, homes and our health.

Whilst there are governmental actions in place, what does it mean for business? How does sustainability tie into strategy, profit and competition?

Sustainability is an increasingly important issue that is at the forefront of how the world operates. For businesses, incorporating initiatives into the heart of business won’t only benefit the world around you – but will keep you relevant, cut costs and expand your customer base.

To remain a favourite among consumers, going green is vital. Over a third of consumers in the UK say they make sure to buy products from companies with strong environmental credentials, whilst a huge 84 per cent of consumers in the UK and the US say that poor sustainability would make them stop buying from a brand.

When it comes to costs, it makes financial sense to invest in green technologies. A new ‘green calculator’ from O2 found that companies with 1,000 employees could have annual savings of £2.6 million.

Research from Barclays has also found that improvements to lighting, heating, water and waste management would lead to see ‘significant savings‘ for SMEs.

The business case for going green is clear for multiple reasons, however for small businesses without a whole sustainability team at the ready, implementing these changes can be difficult.

Following the popularity of our last event focusing on Bristol’s journey toward becoming net-zero, the next in our Bristol24/7 Presents series will focus on businesses and the actions they can take to become more sustainable.

Join Bristol24/7 on Thursday, February 17 to hear from experts on their experience on how businesses can create and deliver plans to become more sustainable. The event will provide actionable steps and provide information to local organisations that can offer advice and assistance.
