Why we must celebrate the women in Bristol’s night time economy
It’s no doubt that Bristol’s night time economy is thriving. Despite a bumpy past couple of years thanks to the pandemic, this is a city that has been well known for its music venues and nightlife.
In 2021, Bristol was home to 1,127 night time economy premises. 39 music venues & nightclubs, 784 hospitality venues, 5 theatres, 52 hotels and 13 breweries.
Last year, it was recognised that extra efforts need to be made to ensure women’s safety at night time and authorities in Bristol were awarded £282,000 to tackle crimes against women at night.
is needed now More than ever
Carly Heath, Bristol Night-Time Economy Advisor, said: “This funding is a very welcome endorsement of our commitment to improving the safety of women at night. It is also a reminder that women’s safety can only be improved by taking action to improve the conditions in which women experience the night-time economy.”
This is welcome news. However, when it comes to women in the night time economy, it is about a lot more than safety.
From DJs to event managers, musicians to festival organisers, there is a huge range of women in Bristol that are curating the city at night.

We are seeing collectives such as the Concrete Jungyals and Booty Bass, which are encouraging women and non-binary people to DJ, putting on some of the best nights across the city. Responsible for our very own St Paul’s Carnival is LaToyah McAllister-Jones. And of course, Carly Heath leads the industry as the official Bristol Night-Time Economy Advisor.
As a celebration to these women who are making waves in the industry, Bristol24/7 will be hosting a panel event with expert panellists across the city to discuss their role in the nighttime economy.
