Down apples and pears
The ancient tradition of apple rolling will once again be resurrected on the Christmas Steps on Saturday, October 18.
That’s if your definition of ancient is three years, but who’s quibbling when this much fun can be had hurling fruit to a steep gradient with the chance of winning plenty of cider.
“As the story goes, a basket of apples fell off a rickety cart on its way to market, rolled down the Steps, squashed at the bottom and started to ferment,” regales Pete Snowman from Bristol Cider Shop with tongue firmly in cheek.
is needed now More than ever
“It was only when locals noticed that horses drinking from a nearby trough were behaving strangely that they started to investigate, and it was mariner Edward Teach that famously remarked ‘Ere, what’s this ‘orse got inside ‘er?’.”
On Sunday, October 19, bring any apples you haven’t rolled down the Christmas Steps along to St Werburgh’s City Farm’s Boiling Wells site for their Apple Day celebration. Hand press your own fruit at an event which will also feature live music, singing, dancing, workshops, games, hot food and of course, cider.
