Rave on calling
The volunteer-led community festival Brisfest took a year off in 2015, but it’s all set to return this year in a new form. In the meantime, fundraiser Rave on Avon: Mixtape Sessions looks like being a special night out in its own right. A party that sprawls around the clubs of Stokes Croft, RoA has been part of the Brisfest picture since the beginning – but this new version ups the ante with a handful of big-name DJs joining the Bristol stalwarts.
There are 11 ‘zones’ across Lakota, Blue Mountain, The Love Inn, No.51, The Snug and The Crofters Rights, featuring everything from soul and disco to garage, techno and drum & bass. Daytime events are free, while a single wristband (£12.50 advance) allows you to venue-hop until 6am. Headliners include Randall and Slipmatt, both forgoing their usual styles to hark back to the glory days of acid and hardcore. Other highlights include a back-to-back AV set from DJs Cheeba and Moneyshot, both masters of mixing technique and eclectic track selection. With contingents from crews like WonkaVision, Tremor, Parallel Dimensions, Neverlution and WILD there’s enough local talent to make for difficult choices throughout the night.
