5 festivals happening in October 2016
1) London Film Festival
Oct 5-16
London
Price: various
Biggest film fest in the country, basically. Little we can say about the 2016 event at the mo – save to note they’ve announced a major new filmmakers’ bursary – but expect features, documentaries and shorts from across the globe.

2) Swanage Blues & Roots Festival
Oct 6-9
Swanage, Dorset
Price: £10 w/e
A properly bargainous affair, this – drop a tenner on a wristband and you’ve got access to 100 musicians playing at 60 events in 15 indoor venues. Besides the (TBA) main line-up, expect to find plenty of jam sessions in local hostelries.

3) Cheltenham Literature Festival
Oct 7-16
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Price: various
Another of the high-calibre Cheltenham festival stable. Again, too early for any line-up announcements, but 2015’s will give you the measure: six Booker Prize winners, and savvy/contemporary enough to recruit rapper George the Poet as a guest director.

4) Harmonica Festival
Oct 28-30
The Folk House, Bristol
Price: £38 w/e
World-class sucking and blowing from the pros, though blues harp players of whatever level of proficiency are invited to take part in this annual NHL-organised (National Harmonica League) shindig.

5) Simple Things
No confirmed date
Bristol
Has swiftly become one of Bristol’s premier festivals, stretching across the city to supply some of the most diverse, progressive acts around. No word on this year’s line-up, so just cast your eyes over 2015’s and hope/expect for similar: Skepta & JME, Battles, Savages, Penguin Cafe, Lee Scratch Perry, Wire, Factory Floor, Maximum Joy, Beak>, Ron Trent, Objekt, Mike Skinner and Untold.
