Boomtown cancels 2021 festival
Boomtown has been cancelled for another year, with organisers saying they are “devastated”.
The festival, which usually takes place in August, will not be taking place due to a lack of Covid-19 insurance policy from the government.
The Boomtown team said in a statement; “With less than four months to go until the event, and after almost half a year of collective campaigning to the government, COVID specific cancellation insurance simply does not exist.”
is needed now More than ever
“This means anyone putting on an event this year will be doing so without the safety net of insurance to cover them.”
“For an independent event as large and complex as ours, this means gambling up to an eight-figure sum if we were to proceed and not be able to go ahead due to COVID. This would risk the long-term future of Boomtown.”
The festival is planned to return on the weekend of August 10-14, 2022.
Whilst Boomtown did receive a grant from the Arts Council, which helped stabilise the company going forward, it was not viable to continue plans for this summer.
The organisers of the festival have said that they are looking forward to next year’s festival season and are in “one of the strongest positions we’ve ever been in because we’ve put in so much time, effort, energy and creativity into this show already.”
“At this point in time, it is completely sold out with a waiting list of 40,000 people, so we are in a really good and exciting place to bounce back,” they continued.
