Bristol Festival of Ideas to be held online

The Bristol Festival of Ideas is launching a new programme of online talks, bringing international speakers to Bristol during Covid-19.

The festival of discussions and debates, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2020, has previously hosted speakers including US senator Bernie Sanders, former Irish President Mary Robinson, and rapper and writer Akala.

2020’s online events will bring continue to offer a high quality events, but they will, for the first time, all be free to access.

Two online events have been announced so far. Economist Anne Case and Nobel Prize winner Angus Deaton will discuss the decline of the USA on Friday, 26 June and journalists Rachel Louise Synder and Sian Norris will discuss domestic violence on Tuesday, 30 June.

Events will be free to view online through Facebook and Crowdcast due to Covid-19 and will be available to rewatch. Much like in-person events, the audience will be able to interact using chats, polls and asking questions.

An in-person event is still planned for Wednesday, September 30 with authors Julian Baggini, Samantha Harvey, and Joanna Kavenna. A discussion with author and critic Pamela Hutchinson planned for late July has been postponed to 2021.

More online events are still to be announced for summer 2020. Speakers billed to appear include Turkish journalist Ece Temelkuran, the Financial Times’ Martin Sandbu, Russian-American journalist Masha Geesan and documentary filmmaker Jenny Kleeman.
