Knowle West Fest 2020 to go digital

By Charlie Watts  Friday Jul 10, 2020

It’s at this time of the year that preparations are usually well underway for Knowle West Fest.

This year it looked like the community festival might not be going ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the end, organisers decided that the show must go on – but it will look a little different as it will all be online.

Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) is coordinating the 2020 fest, and local people are being called on to create content for it.

“It seems like a good year for KWMC to do this as the idea is to create an online version of the festival, so this is right up our street,” says KWMC’s Martha King.

“People could do a video showcasing their organisation or community project. They could do one of them performing. Or, they could do a how-to video, like a craft challenge, yoga class or cooking demonstration.”

KWMC is also offering free tech support to help people do their videos as well as a small payment for their time.

The videos then be streamed online as part of this year’s Knowle West Fest on Saturday, September 12 – but KWMC is still keen to bring the feel of the festival to people’s homes.

“We plan to also post out festival packs, including things like glow sticks, glitter, etc,” says Martha.

Knowle West Fest was originally set up to celebrate the best of the community and for the last few years has been held at Filwood Community Centre.

It usually features activities, food and performances – and reggae artist Da Fuchaman and His Fire Blaze Band headlined last year’s event.
