Preview: Bristol Big Green Week

By Alison Maney  Thursday Jun 9, 2016

Bristol’s Big Green Week, a celebration of all things sustainable and eco-friendly, begins this Saturday and runs for nine days through June 19, featuring over 150 events throughout the city.

The celebration’s nine days will highlight nine smart living themes – community, nature, homes, waste, money, energy, transport, food and health. Each day will also feature three smart living calls to action, and the festival asks the people of Bristol to participate in at least one a day.

Notable Big Green Week activities include a talk by Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs and the Community Land Trust at the Watershed on Monday, June 13; a BYOB supper club with an organic three-course meal on Frieday, June 17; and the Bristol Grand Prix on Saturday, June 18.

Big Green Week will also premiere a new addition called City Ideas with the Architecture Centre, powered by Pechakucha. The informal breakfast talks at the Big Green Week Festival Hub promise to be fun, provocative and short.

“Big Green Week festival draws on the incredible talents, passion and commitment of a diverse range of individuals, organisations and groups that make Bristol such an amazing green city,” says Big Green Week director Darren Hall. “This year we are exploring the concept of smart living; the small, everyday, beneficial and often money saving choices that are also good for our city, our communities and the planet. Choices that are good for today, but also leave a positive legacy for the next generation.”

Marks & Spencer have partnered with Big Green Week and plan to begin their Spark Something Good initiative alongside the festival.
