Preview: Knee Deep 2018

By Ellie Pipe  Thursday Aug 30, 2018

Small, understated and with a strong reputation for showcasing the finest up and coming talent, Knee Deep might just be Cornwall’s best kept festival secret.

After a fallow year, the non-profit celebration of music and arts returns for its seventh instalment on Friday, August 31 – Saturday, September 1, with a stellar lineup that includes The Magic Gang, new jazz talents Tenderlonious & Emma-Jean Thackray, and Glaswegian art-pop duo Free Love (FKA Happy Meals).

There will a strong Bristol contingent represented at the secluded Cornish location for 2018, including Banofee Pies, Harvey Causon, Rhythm Sister and a Noods Radio takeover, featuring Chukwudi, Jake Amos, DJ 2 Button, Cleyra, Femke.

Knee Deep organisers are also expanding the spoken word, poetry and workshop offering this year, with the likes of Bristol’s recent National Poetry Slam Champion Solomon O.B taking to the stage, as well as British-born Cypriot and award-winning poet, writer and publisher Anthony Anaxagorou and South West poet, performer & painter Jackie Juno.

The collaboration with Plymouth College of Art continues with drop-in short-course sessions on illustration, pottery, letterpress and more.

Started by a bunch of school friends with a love of music, the festival has built up a reputation for picking future music stars, with previous acts including Wolf Alice, Drenge, Glass Animals, Kate Tempest, Swim Deep, George Ezra, Willy Mason, Tourist, Koreless, and Lone.

With a capacity of just 1,000 and no corporate branding, the friendly two-day festival offers a host of daytime activities – from pasty making to interactive art, plus live music, followed by late night parties with world-class DJs.
