Lean Meals – cafe review

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Dec 8, 2015

‘Feeling good’. That’s the slogan writ large on one wall of Lean Meals newly opened on Perry Road.

Look closer and you’ll see it’s just part of the lyrics from the song made famous by Nina Simone. Whatever your take on inspirational life quotes being taken from songs, it sums up the ethos of this new cafe.

Bristol has split into two this year. On one side there is the dessert bars such as Sundae’s Gelato on Baldwin Street and Coco’s Desserts on Stapleton Road. On the other there is health food cafes such as Superfoods on Park Street and Beyond the Wall within The Triathlon Shop in the harbourside.

Lean Meals falls firmly into the latter camp, with a menu so nutritious it will make couch potatoes cringe.

It’s so right-on it has artificial grass on part of the floor and shares a front door with a yoga studio. There is gluten-free porridge, wholemeal rice, pizzas with reduced fat mozzarella, protein gourmet vanilla yogurt, and goji and maca raw brownies with a cacao frosting.

There aren’t milkshakes here but protein shakes – the huge tubs sitting high above the white-tiled counter.

Are you feeling good? It’s impossible to feel worse after a visit to Lean Meals.
