The Eating Room – cafe review

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Jan 13, 2016

The Eating Room on Wells Road has replaced a former weighing machine shop. There’s evidently no longer much need for these any more. The new cafe forms part of the neighbouring Copper & Corduroy vintage store which has moved to Totterdown from St Nick’s Market.

A deal on a Tuesday sees a slice of cake and coffee for £3.50. My blueberry and orange cake made by Pearly King Cakes was lovely, washed down by a well-made flat white with beans from Hengrove’s Roasted Rituals.

There is space for a dozen customers inside The Eating Room sitting at mismatched tables and chairs, with a simple menu of coffee, tea, cakes and sandwiches.

The sandwiches are all served on focaccia bread made by nearby Baked, with options such as pastrami, Swiss cheese, French mustard and sweet pickles; to feta with grilled courgette, red peppers, salad and sun dried tomato paste.

Come the spring, tables and chairs will be put on the pavement outside which hosts the increasingly popular BS4 Market on the first Sunday of every month.

A fascinating find in one corner of the cafe was a yellowing copy of the Evening Post from August 12, 1966. Above John Lennon apologising for saying the Beatles were more popular than Jesus was a story about junior doctors threatening a strike over the postponement of a promised pay deal.

Weighing machines may not be quite so prevalent any more but some things never change.
