Wainwright’s – cafe review

By Martin Booth  Monday Nov 9, 2015

In hand-painted lettering, a sign above the front window of Oddbins on Princess Victoria Street reads: “One of the few shops in Clifton that doesn’t sell coffee.”

They’re not wrong and in the last few weeks the choices have only increased with the opening in quick succession of Saffron and Anna Cake Couture on Boyce’s Avenue, soon to be followed by Boyce’s Pantry.

The latest new opening is Wainwright’s in a former clothes shop on Regent Street.

Its difference to most in the vicinity other than Spicer & Cole is a focus on speciality coffee, with a different single origin roast promised every week alongside the house blend from Clifton Coffee.

My piccolo with beans from El Salvador was well-made if served too scalding – many of the more subtle flavors of coffee are revealed only at lower temperatures. But it was a pleasant surprise, however, to be given a small glass of water to accompany my drink.

It’s early days here at the moment but in the future there will be deli-style sandwiches and evening openings to showcase their coffee – a drink for which Cliftonites evidently still have an unquenched thirst.
