Bar Buvette
31 Baldwin Street, BS1 1RG
“Great date night fodder as well as a perfect get away on a lunch break. I love the kitchen, it’s on display for all to see. The wines are superb & so are the accompanying dishes. It’s all stripped back in there and the shell of the previous venue still very present. I recommend perching yourself up on a bar seat in front of their big front window just above ground level, do some people watching, maybe read a few pages of a book, adjust your beret & for a minute, feel suitably French.”

Falafel King
Cotham Hill, Narrow Quay
“I love jingly janglies, sparkly shinies and I’m a sucker for a theme. This place is a hidden gem in a super literal sense. The ground floor is Falafel King, yes like the van near the fountains, but they have more time on Cotham Hill to prep & care for the wider range of food they serve than their mobile counterpart & it is fantastic. You can sit in upstairs for quick bite but don’t, head down into their middle eastern grotto. It’s like Jasmine never met Aladdin and instead spent her days collecting every gleaming object she could & put it in a treasure trove / café. Also, they sometimes do belly dancing in there just to really hammer home the feel of the place.”

Flour & Ash
5qx, 203B Cheltenham Road, BS6 5QX
“Best pizza place award goes to sweet F&A. There is stiff competition in Bristol for the title, but Flour & Ash have found this incredible middle ground of serving up simple, restricted and completely original pizzas. The ox cheek one is fantastic, instead of a tomato base you get ox cheek ragu and instead of cheese you get béchamel. Is it still a pizza? I literally don’t care. I’ve never had circle bread like it. Their ice cream and sorbet selection has the same ethos as their pizza; if you’re going to do it, do it right.”

Gallimaufry
26-28 Gloucester Road, BS7 8AL
“Everything they value is on point, it’s artistic, the music is varied, excellent quality and always free entry. You could be equally at home with friends in the garden as you could be taking a date to the nook in the top, or taking the fam out for some amazing small plates. Their attention to detail doesn’t go unmissed, employing regular sign writers, illustrators and artists regularly to keep their façade, events and interior decor sweet.”

The Golden Lion
244 Gloucester Road, BS7 8NZ
“The place has the best pub furniture in Bristol. Like the Old Duke it’s from a time long ago, potentially off a pirate ship, but unlike the Duke it doesn’t feel like it’s about to turn into dust upon using it. They have a classic too-difficult-to-be fun quiz, a very eclectic mix of bands and actually a really underrated feature of a pub, a low ceiling for keeping the heat locked in. There’s nothing I enjoy more in the middle of summer than sweating into a puddle watching a Klezmer band at the back of the Golden Lion with a rowdy bunch of middle to upper Glosrodians.”

Muiño
32 Cotham Hill, BS6 6LA
“What a place. Its brunch menu is fabulous; it’s not destination dining but it is somewhere I love to go. It’s casual and satisfying. It has high chairs for reading papers to make you feel good about yourself and also a teeny bit arrogant that you’re unusually awake on a weekend morning. What kind of food do they serve? All of it. Tapas, cheeseboards, burgers, delicate patés, mussels, eggs royale. Can’t decide? Who cares, it’s all on Wriggle for a fraction of the price of anywhere else.”

Pasta Loco
37A Cotham Hill, BS6 6JY
“Yes, the name is awful and the logo is clipart. But good lord, I’ve never had Italian like it, much of the menu is hardly even recognisable as pasta. Turns out there is a huge amount more to it than spaghetti and lasagne, and you might think ‘does there need to be?’ YES, actually the answer is yes. Pasta Loco create dishes which I can’t even fathom how they are made, and if this isn’t the best reason to visit somewhere to eat then I don’t know what is.”

The Plough Inn
223 Easton Road, BS5 0EG
“The best pub-club in Bristol and an outdoor area with more stories than Aesop. It’s a late night, dark-at-all-times, grimy boozer for all.”

The Star & Dove
75-78 St Luke’s Road, BS3 4RY
“I’ve never had a roast dinner come close and they are unmatched in their consistent delivery of the highest grade scotch egg in town. This place is fine dining under no pretensions, you can sit comfortably next to an open fire with a dog and a pint just like it’s 1682 or join the dining area next door for a low-lit, beautifully presented and remarkable dining experience.”

Danielle Coombs, Bishopston Supper Club

Bag O’ Nails
141 St George’s Road, Hotwells, BS1 5UW
“Kittens, proper beer, pork pies, vinyl, board games and the best landlord ever. Pretty much our perfect Sunday hideout if we’re not working or at the allotment.”

Bar Buvette
31 Baldwin Street, BS1 1RG
“Just simply wine, charcuterie and cheese heaven. Great to pop in for a quick glass and nibble after work or a full dinner. Love this place so much and every dish from the menu we’ve tried has been absolutely delightful. Lovely to try unusual wines you wouldn’t expect to see elsewhere.”

Bell’s Diner
1-3 York Road, BS6 5QB
“We return often to places such as Bell’s that are dependably pleasing to the taste buds, welcoming, informal and comforting. Selection of small dishes and wines by the glass mean you get to try lots of different flavours and textures in one sitting.”

Birch
47 Raleigh Road, BS3 1QS
“From using their own homegrown or foraged fruit, vegetables, mushrooms and nuts, to butchering whole animals and using everything, and even making their own cider, Birch is arguably one of the best restaurants in Bristol for sourcing & use of produce. Simple, but well thought-out menus, I just wish we lived closer, we’d be there all the time.”

BOX-E
10, Cargo 1, BS1 6WP
“Best meal we’ve had this year. Incredible what Elliott & Tess achieve in this space. Stunning food.”

Bulrush
21 Cotham Road, BS6 5TZ
“Best meal we had last year! Beautiful, clever, inventive, delicious. Perfect for a special treat.”

Chilli Daddy
98 Queens Road, BS8 1LW
“Tasty, quick sichuan noodly lunch pots and dumplings.”

The Drapers Arms
447 Gloucester Road, BS7 8TZ
“Micro-pub on Gloucester Road from Ashley Down brewery who have just won CAMRA Bristol Pub Of The Year. Completely free of pretence, just great beer served straight from the cask, and no distractions from great conversation (care taken to improve acoustics I feel is a great touch) apart from a possible bag of pork scratchings.”

Hillgrove
53 Hillgrove Street North, BS2 8LT
“Fantastic selection of beers, often have street food pop-ups and tap takeovers, good music, and they’ve saved many a Sunday by serving roasts past 5pm.”

Katie and Kim’s Kitchen
41 Picton Street, BS6 5PZ
“Best breakfast and cheese scones.”

Pasta Loco
37A Cotham Hill, BS6 6JY
“Just wonderful comfort food lushness.”

Station Kitchen
Silver Street, BS1 2AG
“Delicious fresh lunch options, salads and cakes. They are run by the YMCA and help young people with various community initiatives and are largely run by volunteers. The staff are lovely and there’s plenty of space to sit and read, or catch up on emails. Children are very welcome too, plus the courtyard garden is a lovely sun trap.

St Werburgh’s City Farm Cafe
Watercress Road, BS2 9YJ
“Beautiful seasonal food, ethically and thoughtfully sourced with lots of foraged ingredients. They use as much produce from the farm and allotment, or foraged, as possible and preserve, cure, and ferment their own products. The building feels as if it’s been sculpted from nature and the log burner makes it nice and cosy even in winter. Another great place to bring kids.”

Wallfish
112 Princess Victoria Street, BS8 4DB
“Classic dishes well prepared. can’t go wrong with Wallfish, one of our favourites.”

Water Sky
Eastgate Oriental City, BS5 6XY
“For dim sum lunch.”

Emma Chapman-Burnett, Yonder Collective

Flour & Ash
5qx, 203B Cheltenham Road, BS6 5QX
“Sourdough pizza seems to be popping up all over Bristol and beyond, and I am definitely a fan. When I fancy venturing outside of Bristol but can’t quite make it, I hop over to the new Flour & Ash in Westbury on Trym. The setting and small alley you walk down to access the restaurant gives the impression of being in Oxford or Bath. A cosy and classy atmosphere with delicious and interesting flavours of pizza, I would recommend a trip over to North Bristol.”

Katie and Kim’s Kitchen
41 Picton Street, BS6 5PZ
“My mini haven in Bristol. I call it mine because I spend every other weekend there for Bristol’s best brunch and more recently quick coffee stop trips and lunch bites. The place gives a quirky and community feel reflecting the location of Stokes croft. A large communal table features in the room with a friendly and relaxed approach from the staff making the whole experience rather homely. The perfect place to take friends from out of town to show them ‘real Bristol’. The owners named Katie and Kim, funnily enough, are always around for a quick chat and baking new sweet treats to try every week. Usually I’m a little more adventurous with ordering food by picking a variety of items of the menu to try, however the bacon, eggs and date chutney on sourdough is just too delicious not to enjoy every time!”

Little Victories
Wapping Wharf, 7 Gaol Ferry Steps, BS1 6WE
“It’s hard to pinpoint one reason why I would call this my favourite coffee shop in Bristol, from the excellent tasting coffee to inspiring décor and everything in between its become a usual hideaway for me. Perfect place to stop by with a friend for a cuppa and cake, or work solo with laptop in hand. The white light space makes for a perfect daydreaming spot and the counter constantly boasts a range of fresh sandwiches and cakes to tempt you!”

Poco Tapas Bar
45 Jamaica Street, BS2 8JP
“The cocktails are amazing but espresso martini is where it’s at! No need to try anything else. Whether you fancy authentic tapas and small plates or just some evening drinks, I love this place. A great option to pop by in the day for brunch or a coffee and pastry sitting by the window looking out over Stokes Croft, perfect for people watching and reading!”

Fozia Ismail, Matatu Kitchen

Big Juice Bar
21-22 The Glass Arcade, St Nicholas Market, BS1 1LJ
“Love this place! Such great value and delicious juices. Always get avo in mine to make it a smoothie. And the winter warmer was ace!”

Kimchi Kim
Gloucester Road, BS7 8TP
“Fantastic quality authentic Korean food – really good value and delicious. Our kids love the Bimbimbap and the owner Myong Kim is just lovely. It’s our regular spot for Matatu Kitchen planning.”

No.12 Easton
12 High Street, BS5 6DL
“Bacon sarnie wizards! Fantastically sourced, big promoters of Bristol produce and so family friendly. One day we will try the other brunch options on the menu but that bacon sarnie makes it hard!”

Wilson’s
24 Chandos Road, BS6 6PF
“Just the best date night (or girls’ lunch….or solo grown-up lunch….or any special occasion) place in Brizzle. Incredible food, always something really interesting on the menu. Fantastic wines and gorgeous pared back surroundings.”

The Woolly Cactus
Victoria Street, BS1 6DT
“Great value Mexican street food. Delicious tacos in the centre of town perfect for a quick pit stop.”

Kalpna Woolf, 91 Ways

Jeevan’s
415-417 Stapleton Road, BS5 6NE
Home cooked parathas, fresh spinach sabzi and hot fried snacks. Great for a stop-by.

Kookootoo
518 Filton Avenue, BS7 0QE
“My favourite restaurant in Bristol. Home-cooked food, truly authentic, cooked with love and attention. Moh and Christien are honest, good people wanting to share the food that Moh grew up eating with his family in Iran. No unnecessary frills except warm friendship and truly genuine. Food is delicious and simple.”

Lido
Oakfield Place, BS8 2BJ
“Stylish environment with stylish Mediterranean good food. Chef Freddy Bird is great and it feels like a treat but is friendly.”

The Station Kitchen
Silver Street, BS1 2AG
“Healthy, good food – contemporary and well-priced. Perfectly located in an otherwise food desert.”
