Flaky pastry and spicy delights at Jeevan Sweets

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Sep 9, 2020

Jeevan Sweets is the place to go in Bristol for samosas.

There aren’t many places in the city creating the fried pastry snack with as high status as the east Bristol, family-run business.

Located on the corner of Stapleton Road and St Mark’s Road – it’s just a two-minute walk from Bristol Sweet Mart – Jeevan’s sells Indian sweet treats, known as mithai, and savoury dishes.

The 100 per cent vegetarian café and takeaway, which opened in 2011, proudly displays its offerings in glass cases underneath the main selling counter.

Not only are there a myriad of sugary wonders; from seven flavours of burfi, a dense, milk-based treat, to aromatic peda made from khoa and sugar, flavoured with spices such as cardamom and saffron, to flaky, melt in the mouth, papdi, there are endless Indian dishes to try as well.

Arguably the star of the show, however, are the vegetable samosas: seasoned potato, peas and carrots, the flavours are an explosion of fragrant and mildly spiced Indian delight.

Greasy goodness from Jeevan Sweets

Freshly made, the fried treat is just the right amount of greasy. After buying two samosas for the grand price of £1.50 and walking to nearby Eastville Park, the brown paper bag was just beginning to dot with oil. Taking a bite, the pastry flakes away, and the bright yellow potato, and the rainbow of mixed vegetables are a joy to eat.

It’s traditional, tasty Indian fare from beginning to end. From the first bite of fried goodness, right through to scoffing the fallen flaky pastry collected at the bottom of the bag, Jeevan Sweets’ legendary status stands in good stead.
