In pictures: Award-winning chefs demo at Bristol Food Connections

By Niamh Walton  Wednesday Jun 13, 2018

Corn Street is no stranger to delicious food and produce, with its Farmers’ and Producers’ Market every Wednesday, but this week, as part of Bristol Food Connections Festival, there was something even more special going on than usual.

Colourful veg brought straight to the city from the farm

For lucky Bristolians passing by St Nicholas Market on Wednesday June 13, an incredible demonstration of delicious food was prepared live by Barny Haughton of Square Food Foundation, winner of the BBC Radio Bristol Food Hero Award at the BBC Food & Farming Awards in 2016, accompanied by Freddy Bird, head chef at Clifton Lido and co-presenter of Channel 4’s Hidden Restaurants along with Michael Roux Jr, and assisted by Charlotte Fife, cookery teacher at Square Food Foundation.

The chefs blended simple ingredients in order to create delicious bite-size dishes

Sourdough bread with butter, horseradish, dill and the star of the show: smoked eel

Produce from the market was used, such as this fresh bread from Pullins Bakery

The delicious food was prepared with generous amounts available for the public to try, including this homemade houmous

Despite the overcast weather, the public still gathered for the demonstration

Barny will be cooking with young protégées at the Square Food Foundation and Bristol24/7 Summer Feast, taking place on Friday June 15 at The Station. Tickets cost £30 and are on sale nowAll proceeds will help to fund Square Food Foundation’s ‘How to be a Chef’ programme, training the next generation of chefs.
