Local restaurants and cafes go green to prevent holiday hunger

By Josie Scott-Taylor  Friday Jul 12, 2019

Some of Bristol’s favourite restaurants and cafes will serve green-inspired dishes during the summer holidays to support FareShare South West’s #ActiveAteBristol campaign.

The region’s biggest food redistribution charity, FareShare South West saves over 400 tonnes of good surplus food each year, redistributing it to nearly 200 schools, charities and community groups.

The campaign’s aim for 2019 is to provide over 40,000 meals to children at projects and holiday clubs throughout Bristol.

“When school stops, so does school food support. For some Bristol families, the six-week break can be a challenging time,” says Julian Mines, CEO of FareShare South West. “Increased food, childcare and activity costs can be an additional strain to a family already struggling to make ends meet.”

“With over 7,300 Primary School pupils in Bristol receiving free school meals during term time, a vacuum is left when the holidays begin.”

Fundraising campaigns are essential to help the organisation supply the most vulnerable children with food that would otherwise be wasted. A percentage of the money made from selling every one of these green colour-inspired meals will be donated directly to the #ActiveAteBristol cause.

By ordering a dish inspired by the green in FareShare’s logo at a partaking cafe or restaurant, enjoy a meal or treat knowing a donation will made to FareShare South West. The following is a list of locations where diners can enjoy a green inspired treat from July 19 to September 1:

Hobbs House Bakery, North Street & Gloucester Road: Tuscan bread salad
Mud Dock, Bristol Harbourside: Halloumi, new potato and asparagus with harissa tahini
Tincan Coffee Co., North Street & Gloucester Road: Green power bowl and green machine smoothie
No12, Easton: A green element will be added to the special of the day
Yurt Lush, Temple Meads: Buddha bowl
Cafe des Amis, Easton: All cakes and all main dishes

B-Block Pizza, Keynsham: Enjoy a  green smoothie, plus £1 will be added to all bills

#ActiveAteBristol is just one of a number of campaigns the charity runs across the year, with including the likes of the #BigBreakfast campaign, which supports breakfast clubs schools throughout the region.

“Food insecurity is sadly a growing issue in our region but we hope to support as many children as possible with this summer,” says Julian.
