Your Bristol Favourites: Cider
This month, Bristol24/7 readers have been coming up with their favourite places for cider. In alphabetical order, here are 10 of the best:
The Apple
Welsh Back, BS1 4SB
“If I was younger than the Corrie Tap for the Exhibition and the bants. Now the Apple for the selection, the location and the ambience!”
Alison Fletcher
Bristol Cider Shop
7 Christmas Steps, Bristol, BS1 5BS
“The rules didn’t say my choice had to be a pub so I nominate Bristol Cider Shop who are moving from their original home on the Christmas Steps to new premises in Wapping Wharf.”
Sam Perriman
Coronation Tap
8 Sion Place, BS8 4AX
“It’s the eclectic range of folk from dedicated old-timers to newbie students who prop up the bar, and surprisingly good local bands. Of course the most exquisite range of the city’s finest ‘Somerset champagnes’ make it quite unique. I’m not proud to admit that what started off as popping in for a little tipple has often resulted in me and my companeros becoming totally ‘corried’. Thoroughly addictive.”
Paul Hassan
The Hare on the Hill
41 Thomas Street North, BS2 8LX
“Not much on tap – although Bounders is decent but quite a range of bottles.”
Damian Spreckley
Inn on the Green
2 Filton Road, BS7 0PA
“This goes on the list for me because of their annual beer festival, which also regularly includes some damn fine cider.”
Sue Cook
The Old Bookshop
65 North Street, BS3 1ES
“I adore my amazing local the Old Bookshop. I’ve been going since it opened and seen it grow but never lose its charm. I’ve seen in the New Year there dressed as a milk maid… gone through all their gins on one birthday with tonnes of friends. Be it live music, Sunday lunch or a different pop-up, food-wise you can find it all under a roof where a piano is the bar and the crockery is mismatched but the vibe is spot on. And they don’t just serve Thatchers and Strongbow.”
Emma Heesom
The Orchard
Hanover Place, BS1 6XT
“This tucked away hostelry won Camra’s best cider and perry pub of the year in 2009 and they remain committed to serving some of the best and definitely the most lovingly sourced ciders in Bristol.”
Jermaine Morris
The Robin Hood
56 St Michael’s Hill, BS32 8DX
“I found Sandford’s Devon Mist a couple of years ago at the Robin Hood on St Michael’s Hill. It became a bit of a routine doing their excellent Wednesday night quiz over a couple of pints. I’ve found it in a few other places (Crofters Rights) but for me it’s a bit too much for a session cider, but great brain food for a good quiz!”
Adam Magrill
Spoke & Stringer
Harbour Inlet, BS1 5AD
“One of my favourite places for cider is Spoke & Stringer nestled in the harbour with views of the Floating Harbour and the ss Great Britain and a nice harbour walk. Always great staff and a good atmosphere.”
Jon Craig
The Stable
Cannons Road, BS1 5UH
“Cider and pizza is not the most obvious of combinations – but The Stable do some of the best pizzas in town and their cider selection of more than 60 is up there as well. If you can’t make a decision, try a tasting board with a third of a pint of five different choices.”
