Breaking Bread announces return

By Lowie Trevena  Thursday Mar 25, 2021

Breaking Bread has announced its return for 2021.

The collaboration between Pasta Loco, Pasta Ripiena, the Love Inn, the Pipe & Slippers and the Pony & Trap will begin to reopen its canopies on the Downs from Thursday, April 15.

The first to reopen will be the Pipe & Lovers beer garden, serving food and drink under a canopy.

It will be reopened in two phases, the second part being the reopening of the Breaking Bread restaurant, a joint venture from Pasta Loco, Pasta Ripiena and the Pony & Trap, later in spring.

New menus and a Sunday lunch service has also been announced for the site, an outdoor space on the Downs for drinking, entertainment and food that was initially open between July and October 2020.

The Breaking Bread team have also announced that a 150-capacity seated entertainment tent will be added to the village, as will the Team Canteen, a fully equipped kitchen and events space that will host popups, fundraisers, and provide education and training opportunities.

Organisers will also be opening Breaking Bread’s venues for private hire for the first time since the venture’s launch in 2020.

“It’s great to be coming back to The Downs, after such a great response last year,” says project co-founder Josh Eggleton. “More than 35,000 people came to Breaking Bread over the four months we were open.

“We’ll be back open and ready for the relaxation of restrictions, providing a socially distanced space to enjoy some al fresco drinks and we have a huge programme of events, initiatives and dining experiences planned in line with each phase of the reopening.”

They hope that the new additions to the site will not only bolster its events offerings, but will bring a real “community focus” to the site.

“The Team Canteen being set up right in the middle of the site,” Josh says.

“We are hoping that it will be a really useful resource for community groups and other food organisations from across the city, helping us to give employment opportunities and training to young people and providing a space to showcase how we can make Bristol a fairer city.”

Advanced bookings for the Pipe & Lovers will open on Friday, March 26.
