Brian Blessed wishes happy birthday to city centre pub

By Martin Booth  Monday Sep 21, 2020

Brian Blessed has wished happy birthday to a Bristol pub in his own inimitable style.

The national treasure, who attended Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in his youth, appears in an animated video to mark a decade of the Gryphon.

In the animation by Dave Brain, the bearded and bellowing actor says that metal music and Bristol are both close to his heart.

Blessed calls the Colston Street pub, celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2020, “perhaps the best real ale and heavy metal pub this side of Valhalla”.

“Fine ales and heavy fucking metal. What more could you ask for?”

Blessed adds: “Please support your local independent music venues. During this unprecedented shitstorm of a year, we need each other more than ever.

“Do what makes you happy, follow those dreams, be excellent to each other and don’t let the bastards grind you down.”

Writing on Instagram, Gryphon owner John Ashby said: “Thank you to everyone that has supported us over the past ten years. It’s been emotional.

“What should have been the biggest birthday party weekend, will just be me playing some tunes online for you to listen at home!”
