Bristol burger chef named best in the UK

By Martin Booth  Thursday Feb 21, 2019

Space is already at a premium in Squeezed, and now one more item has to be fitted inside by owner Alex Hayes: his trophy for being named Burger Chef of the Year at the National Burger Awards.

Hayes competed against more than a dozen other chefs at the competition in Islington in north London on Wednesday.

He had to impress a panel of judges with both a signature burger and a technical challenge using ingredients provided.

“The competition was fierce but the respect between competitors was evident,” Hayes told Bristol24/7 the morning after his victory.

“It feels incredible to win on behalf of my wonderful team at Squeezed. The support from Bristol and beyond has been immense!”

St Werburgh’s resident Hayes opened Squeezed in August 2017. As well as burgers, the restaurant specialises in homemade lemonade in a variety of flavours.

Hayes regularly sells out from his single converted shipping container in Cargo 2 at Wapping Wharf, with a near neighbour Rosie Morgan of The Bristol Cheesemonger also picking up a recent national award, having been named the best cheese shop in the UK.

The award-winning chef regularly collaborates with his fellow Wapping Wharf businesses for events such as Chinese new year and Day of the Dead, where he serves one-off burgers.
