Dining at dizzy new heights
Diners with a strong stomach and a head for heights will take to the skies from Thursday morning for Bristol in the Sky – the first time ever that the event has come to Bristol.
Everyone including the chefs are thoroughly strapped in before the entire table-and-chairs construction, complete with lights and music, is lifted 100ft into the air by an enormous crane parked between Millennium Square and Bordeaux Quay.

The view is completely unexpected, with church spires popping up above high-rise hotels, and the distant green hills visible from every side.

Skateboarders in Lloyds Amphitheatre, cyclists in Millennium Square and rowers in the harbour become tiny animated dolls, somehow going about their daily lives at ant-level.
Even the weather is different – be sure to wrap up warm against the wind if you are going up.

Six sittings a day with space available around the table for just 22 guests allow Bristolians to get the most from the huge mobile crane. Breakfasts, lunches, gelato, pie, dinner and cocktails are all going to be consumed high above the city’s rooftops by fearless foodies.
Occupying a space normally accessible only to the birds and the occasional hot air balloon, waiting staff, chefs and sommeliers provide a genuine restaurant service with a view like no other. Just don’t look down.

Well-known food establishments participating include the teams behind Rosemarino, Romy’s Kitchen and Swoon.
On hand to provide some much-needed Dutch-courage to more cautious diners are bartending aces from cocktail bar Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
If you’re going up for a flight, just be sure to keep an eye on everything. There’s no safety net, and accidents do happen: “We’ve just come back from Newcastle, where we lost two phones,” we’re told at the safety briefing. You wouldn’t want anything to ruin a dining experience this special.
