Bristol wine producer wins double at national awards
A Bristol and Somerset-based wine producer has won two awards in one week for the same wine.
Dunleavy Vineyards won the ‘Best Rośe’ trophy at the WineGB WEST awards for its Dunleavy 2022 still rosé, beating scores of other entries from across the west of England in the annual event which features some of the UK’s top wine producers.
Chair of the judging team, Telegraph wine writer and presenter Susy Atkins, described the Dunleavy Rosé as a ‘shining star’ of the competition.

And in the same week, the wine won the prestigious Harper’s Design Award in the same week for its innovative, interactive wine label.

Dunleavy worked with Bristol-based musicians MÃDŁY, Harriet Riley, Stevie Toddler, Alex Garden and Georgie Ward to create the label, who each chose a piece of music to ‘pair’ with their rosé.
The labels all have a QR code which allows the user to listen to the music pairings as they sip.
Label designer Jodie Newman worked with photographer Pete Axford to create a ‘double exposure’ photo-label for each of the artists.
Web designer Andrew Eberlin, owner of Brighterside, then created a web page to bring the whole idea together in a simple and usable format.
The judging panel, made-up of industry experts and designers, said the Dunleavy label showed “striking photography” and “great use of negative space”.
They also noted that the label “reflected the best of design, diversity and culture effectively”.
Responding to the award, Dunleavy director Ingrid Bates said: “Bristol is well known for its vibrant food and music scenes.”
“There’s a lot of crossover between the two industries in terms of the people who work in them and enjoy their output. We wanted to celebrate that.”
“I had seen people using QR codes in all sorts of interesting ways and thought it would be fun to use them to create a mini-interactive experience when drinking our wine.”
“It’s fun to drink the wine on its own but it’s also fun to listen to the paired music and find out about the musicians at the same time.”
Dunleavy vineyards was founded 15 years ago to bring bottles of rosé, sparkling white and sparkling red wine to a host of small, independent shops and restaurants across the country.
They grow their grapes on rented land but ran a successful crowdfunding campaign at the tail end of 2021 to raise funds to buy land to expand their vine plantings which they are still in the process of securing.
