Is this Bristol’s best pub crawl?

By Martin Booth  Monday Oct 30, 2017

From the Barley Mow at the beginning of the alphabet to Zerodegrees at the end, the Portcullis in the west to Bocabar in the east, and the Gallimaufry in the north to the Old Bookshop in the south, a new map might just be the best Bristol pub crawl ever devised.

Bristol Craft Beer Map, also known as The 39 Stops, has been compiled by beer writer Tim Webb and doesn’t just feature pubs but also Bristol’s best shops in which to buy beer (Corks of both Cotham and North Street).

Such is the embarrassment of riches in Bristol at the moment, the map neglects to mention any of the new arrivals in Wapping Wharf, which means no Wild Beer on Gaol Ferry Steps, Corks at Cargo 1 nor The Beer Necessities in Cargo 2; no space for Bottles & Books on Gloucester Road; and also no inclusion for micropubs the Drapers Arms on Gloucester Road nor Snuffy Jack’s in Fishponds.

Some of Bristol’s breweries and growing number of tap rooms are featured on the map, with more promised next year.

“The truth is right now we have one of the most interesting collections of local breweries in Europe, let alone the UK,” says Webb, author of the acclaimed World Atlas of Beer.

“It’s not just the number – there are 15 within the old city boundary at the last count – it’s the different methods they use to brew a unique range of styles, some not found in the UK for a century and others never seen before. This is a city of prize winners and ground-breakers.”
