Brother and sister duo open new restaurant on North Street
A brother and sister duo have opened a new restaurant on North Street.
While experienced chef Helly Highland is in the kitchen at The Malago, her brother John Carnegie – an engineer by trade – can be found front of house.
It has long been Helly and John’s dream to start an independent, family run, neighborhood bar and restaurant, and The Malago is the culmination of that dream in a building that was most recently Zazu’s Kitchen.
is needed now More than ever
”The Malago celebrates the natural and industrial aspects of Bristol city living,” goes the blurb.
“A unique, friendly and welcoming neighborhood bar and restaurant with a focus on fresh, locally sourced and quality food.
“Our food reflects head chef Helly’s love of modern, British cuisine with a unique European influence.”

Bristol Beer Factory beer is on tap at The Malago
The menu encompasses brunch, lunch and evening food. Brunch includes the likes of Wye Valley asparagus, poached eggs, Parma ham and lemon oil (£8); and American pancakes, streaky bacon and maple syrup, or strawberries and chocolate sauce (£7).
Lunch options include blue cheese rarebit on toast, apple and radish salad (£7); and a Malago burger for £11; with a daily selection of sandwiches and bar snacks.
The evening menu contains starters such as beech wood-smoked fillet of beef carpaccio (£8); with mains including pork tenderloin, quail scotch egg, potato and leek terrine, charred tenderstem and spring onion for £17, and chicken supreme, chive mash, morels, asparagus and baby carrots for £16.
There are many local producers as possible, including the Severn Project for edible flowers and leaves, and the Bristol Beer Factory just down the road for their beers.
