Cakes, cocktails and world-record breaking

By Oliver Lawrence  Tuesday Feb 19, 2019

The huge number of Guinness World Records, around 40,000, can be staggering, especially when taking into account the obscurity of a large number of them: Most Wins at the World Beard & Moustache Championships, Longest Career as an Ice Cream Man and Most Big Macs Consumed in a Lifetime, to name just a few.

But on a recent Monday, evening Great British Bake Off 2018 semi-finalist Briony Williams of Bristol-biscuit fame and her friend Chelsie Bailey, finalist of the Bacardi Legacy cocktail competition, attempted to set yet another intriguing new record: The Most Number of People Eating Cake and Drinking Cocktails at One Time.

237 people joined Briony and Chelsie in an evening of drinking cocktails and eating cake at the Gloucester Old Spot in Horfield, drawing together cake lovers and cocktail fanatics from across the city.

“The atmosphere was totally incredible, very busy but so happy and friendly,” Briony told Bristol24/7 the day after the event.

“The cakes were delicious, and so were the drinks – just like usual!”

The record attempt started at 6pm, with Briony having made all the cakes and Chelsie serving the cocktails.

Everyone donated £2 to enjoy bakes, cakes and drinks to raise money for Jessie May, who provide nursing care at home for children with terminal illnesses.

“I can’t begin to imagine being a parent with a terminally ill child,” said Briony, who is running the Bath Half Marathon for Jessie May next month.

“It’s an incredible Bristol charity. It was just unreal. It felt amazing to be able to help.”
