‘Cake innovation hub’ within new cafe and bakery

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Apr 20, 2021

A ‘cake innovation hub’ features alongside a new bakery and coffee shop opened by an experienced Bristol business.

Bakehouse promises to be “a new space for lovers of coffee, freshly-baked bread, award-winning cakes and Instagrammable toasties”.

Bakehouse owners Mike Thorne and Tom Batlle also run Bakesmiths on Whiteladies Road in Clifton and Cakesmiths, which supplies wholesale cakes to independent coffee shops from their base in St Philip’s.

Like Cakesmiths, the new cafe is on St Philip’s Road close to the start of the Bristol & Bath Railway Path.

Batlle said: “We’ve been running our own coffee shops and supplying our cakes to others for years. Now we’ve brought it all together, taking what we know from running Bakesmiths and combine that with what we’ve learnt from baking cakes for coffee shops across Britain at Cakesmiths.”

He added: “It’s also given us a chance to create The Cake Lab, a dedicated cake innovation hub where we’ll be putting our test bakes on the counter for customers to enjoy.

“We’re really excited to be launching after a difficult year for the hospitality industry and can’t wait to welcome everyone to Bakehouse.”
