Coffee and cakes from a converted horsebox

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Mar 2, 2022

Max Roberts and Lottie Cooper have known each other since they were at school in Cheltenham, and have now gone into business together.

Next to one of City Hall’s fountains, the pair have opened Roco within a converted horsebox.

Roco – an amalgamation of Lottie and Max’s surnames – serves coffee from Worcester roastery Studio and cakes from Fed, with Max previously working in their Cotham cafe.

Lottie and Max, who live in Redland, tow the horsebox every day to its pitch from where it is stored in Kingsdown.

Opening hours are from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.

But in only its third week of business, Roco hopes to be open later than usual to coincide with Bristol Light Festival, which has installations on both College Green and Park Street.

“It’s already been nice to see the same people, we have such nice regulars already,” said Lottie, between making coffees for customers on a recent morning.

“We’ve always enjoyed working with people. We love a chitchat.”

Max added: “We don’t want to do too much all at once. We want to settle in first and enjoy it, do the things we do well and then build on it when it’s time.”
