Cookery school expands by launching new catering service

By Charlie Watts  Wednesday Apr 26, 2023

A cookery school that supports young people into employment has expanded by launching a new catering service.

Square Food Foundation, who are based at The Park Centre in Knowle West, have taken on additional kitchen space at the nearby Filwood Community Centre to run the new venture.

Young people who are on Square Food’s How To Be A Chef training programme will be a core part of the initiative and paid for their involvement.

“Our reason for opening this is that it gives these young people that real-life experience so they are working on a job where the food has to be of a top standard and has to be out on time,” said Square Food’s managing director, Eloise Morton.

As part of the service, Square Food are looking to supply catering for events such as weddings, birthday parties and other functions.

The money raised through it will ensure the organisation can continue to run How To Be A Chef and welcome guest chefs such as Josh Eggleton and Adrian Kirikmaa.

How To Be A Chef is partnered with The School of Food – which was formed by Josh and Adrian – so young people are given further opportunities following the conclusion of the 12-week programme.

Barney Houghton, founder and CEO of Square Food, said event catering will be a key part of the work of the organisation.

He added: “Apart from earning money for the charity, it allows us to talk about our food education work, to include students in a real life experience of hospitality and to support the farmers, growers and producers we depend on for a sustainable food future.

“Through it, we also hope always to bring you wonderful food and give you a great and memorable experience.”
