Cooks join forces to host cake sale for India Covid fund

By Ellie Pipe  Wednesday May 26, 2021

A collective of Bristol cooks will be baking hundreds of cakes in a bid to raise money for the people affected by India’s Covid crisis.

Samina (main photo), Joanna, Mona, Catherine, Anne and Sarah will be selling everything from classic cupcakes to a flourless dark chocolate and coconut loaf, with all proceeds going to the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) India Covid Fund.

The group will be making their cakes available via All About The Cooks, a platform that allows people in Bristol to discover talented cooks selling their food locally. They will also be joined by cooks from social enterprise 91 Ways.

All About The Cooks founder Claire Ladkin hopes this is an effective way to make a difference while opportunities for in-person fundraisers are still limited.

“By doing the sale on the platform, we can host all the cakes on one page, giving the people of Bristol a chance to browse through an array of seriously tempting items which they can collect from the cooks’ homes all over Bristol,” says Claire.

“What’s great is that 100 per cent of the money taken will go to the fund, as it’ll be run via our platform for 0 per cent commission. We’re hopeful those who’ve enjoyed food via our platform before – and new users to All About The Cooks – will support our talented cooks as they try to make a difference to a very troubling situation in India.”

Cook Sarah from Bishopston says: “Over the years, when world crises have arisen, I have always tried to do something to help.

“The last time I baked on the scale I will be for this fundraiser was for the NHS workers at the height of the Covid crisis. On that occasion I, like so many others, made a huge amount of baked goods to give the workers a bit of moral support and appreciation. I’m hopeful that by doing the sale online via All About The Cooks, that we can make a substantial donation to the BAPIO India Covid Fund.”
