First Food Connections 2018 events revealed
From the breaking of the Ramadan fast in Barton Hill to celebrating the history of Bell’s Diner at a one-off event at the Montpelier restaurant, the first events announced as part of this year’s Bristol Food Connections all revolve around the theme of time.
From June 11-17 2018, the festival hopes to shine a light on the work that people and communities across Bristol are doing with food and drink.
Bristol Food Connections chief executive Claire Peeters said: “This year’s festival is going to be better and tastier than ever. We can’t wait for the whole city to be taken over by glorious food.”

The Travelling Kitchen’s A Picnic Through Time will reflect the history of Southmead
Ahead of the launch of the full programme on Friday, here are a few of the events confirmed so far:
Open Community Iftar
Run by Bristol’s Sudanese Association, Somali Girls Cooking Group, Somali Kitchen and Food Without Borders, this unique Iftar celebration will see the breaking of the traditional monthly Ramadan fast with a delicious, open community feast. The gathering will also host cooking masterclasses for teenagers and adults, giving them the chance to learn the art of spice mixing and creating some delicious, healthy East African food.

Time and Thyme Again
Since 1976, Bell’s Diner has played a huge part in Bristol’s food and drink scene. To celebrate its history during the festival, Bell’s will be bringing together some of its best dishes from across the decades for a special one-off menu. Dishes will hope to evoke the spirit of the restaurant over the years and the chefs who have cooked behind the stoves.

Stockwood Growing Together Day
A celebration of Bristol Ageing Better project, Stockwood Growing Together, this special day will see generations coming together to make and share fresh food grown at the new community allotment in Southern Links Children’s Centre. Run by local residents with St Monica Trust, Redcatch Community Garden and Southern Links Children’s Centre, visitors will be able to take home recipe cards and mini herb boxes to grow at home.

Time to be Together
A day of community and family food-based activities run by the Hartcliffe Health & Environment Action Group and Hartcliffe & Withywood Community Partnership. This event will include a foraging walk along Dundry Slopes, learning how to cook on an open fire, and picking and cooking from the local community garden. The day will also providing informative demos and tastings surrounding the history of family food.

The Travelling Kitchen’s A Picnic Through Time
Following a series of workshops held throughout the festival at local schools, cafes and community centres, the Food Connections week will culminate with Picnic Through Time from The Travelling Kitchen, with visitors coming together to eat the dishes that reflect the history of Southmead from the 1930s to the present day.
