Friska opens sixth Bristol cafe

By Martin Booth  Monday May 9, 2016

Friska have opened their sixth Bristol cafe on the ground floor of The Eye – the residential tower just the other side of Valentine’s Bridge from Temple Meads.

It marks the start of a busy week for this corner of the city, with wine bar Veeno due to open imminently a few hundred yards away beneath the offices of Burges Salmon.

The new Friska will be familiar to anybody who has previously visited any of the other of their cafes in Bristol on Victoria Street, Queen’s Road, Bristol & Bath Science Park, Bath Road Studios and Cathedral Walk.

There are pastries on the counter, sandwiches and salads in a large chiller, soups and pho noodles – 10p from each which goes to Bristol charity Deki which supports entrepreneurs in the developing world.

The main difference here from other Friskas is huge floor to ceiling windows, a semi-circular shaped room and a view over the Floating Harbour from the small outside seating area.

Keeping an eye on proceedings on opening day, Friska co-founder Griff Holland declared this latest new opening to be a success.

“People understand what we do, what makes us us,” said Griff, who opened the first Friska on Victoria Street in 2009. “When we open, people are now excited about seeing us open. We want to be the best place for breakfast, lunch and coffee every day.”

Friska is an undoubted Bristol food and drink success story of recent years. As well as new openings in their home city they have also recently opened in Birmingham with eyes on other cities, and their rapid growth shows no signs of slowing down just yet.
