Gloucester Road bar shortlisted in prestigious national awards

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Apr 17, 2019

A bar on Gloucester Road has been named the best in Bristol in The National Pub & Bar Awards.

The Gallimaufry will now go forward to the national finals of the awards, which will see 15 regional winners crowned as well as the overall national pub and bar of the year announced.

Previous winners of the Bristol pub and bar in the awards include the Pony & Trap in 2018 and King Street Brewhouse in 2016.

The Gallimaufry co-owner James Koch told Bristol24/7 that the accolade was “a lovely surprise”.

He said: “We don’t do this for awards (or to make us rich!) but some recognition along the way is a nice energy boost for everyone.

“Ultimately, any award is a credit to the incredibly hard working staff we have here, our amazing customers, suppliers and musicians.”

James’ business partner is James Smailes, the general manager is Jamie Grey and head chef is Maddie Crombie, in a bar and restaurant that hosts live music throughout the week.

The National Pub & Bar Awards ceremony takes place in London on May 23, hosted by food critic Jay Rayner.

Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which hosts the awards, said: “Selecting this year’s 94 county winners has been nothing short of inspiring.

“From idyllic countryside pubs to inner city cocktail bars, this is the most eclectic and exciting industry in the world. It’s a privilege to help these businesses get the recognition they deserve.”
