Keep a look out for Beese’s ferry

By Simon Fry  Friday Mar 27, 2015

With Beese’s Bar & Tea Garden reopening on Good Friday, owners Lindy and Phil Leahy are returning their ferry to the River Avon ahead of the new season.

Wintering on dry land, the Beese’s ferry will be launched at Underfall Yard on Saturday, March 28 around midday, conditions allowing, from where she will journey to Conham.

In keeping, a bottle of beer may be smashed on her hull, but, irrespective of such spectacle, Beese’s fans are invited to photograph her on her voyage with the first 25 bringing evidence to the reopened bar receiving a free drink.

The kind gesture stems from Lindy and Phil posing for photos on previous trips and people subsequently saying they had been spotted en route.

Hopefully there will be no repeat of last year when a wheel fell off the boat’s trailer – thankfully, on its return to Conham. Her throttle and gearbox cables have been changed and robust spares bought, and Phil knows locals are ready to help over the coming months if necessary.

Phil said: “Our regulars are the type of people who drop in for a Sunday afternoon drink but will be up to their elbows in grease 30 minutes later if repairs are needed!”
