Home barista training at Extract

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 2, 2014

Meet Betty, a 1955 cast iron vintage Probat roaster from Germany which takes pride of place at Extract Coffee Roasters in St Werburgh’s.

If you’ve ever had an Extract coffee from somewhere like the Arnolfini, Hart’s Bakery, Bakers & Co or Zazu’s Kitchen, the chances are your coffee beans were probably roasted in this behemoth.

But if you can’t quite fit a machine the size of Betty in your kitchen, fear not because the team at Extract have just started running home barista workshops.

The four-hour sessions with Extract’s own coffee roasters and barista trainers are split into three stages covering coffee procurement, selection, roasting and cupping; an introduction to a variety of filter methods including Chemex and Aeropress; and finally all things espresso including shot pulling, milk steaming and latte art.

The next sessions take place on June 14 and July 12. They cost £50 per person, which includes a light lunch and Extract coffee to take home.

As well as the chance to meet Betty and some of the Extract staff, it’s also the first opportunity for the public to see inside the new roastery after a 12-month fit-out, and will be the first of hopefully many more coffee-related events inside the Gatton Road premises.
