Interview: Lara Fair, Pie Baby

By Asa Schuman  Monday Jul 31, 2017

Pie Baby is the lovechild of husband and wife team, Finn and Lara Fair. Bristol24/7 caught up with Lara to discuss the challenges of bringing their product, vegan pies, to the city.

Why did you choose to bring your ideas to Bristol?

We chose to bring Pie Baby to Bristol because it has such a lively and diverse food scene, with a substantial vegan community. When we first visited Bristol, we fell in love with it.  It has such a great atmosphere, supportive community and a real DIY attitude, much like New Zealand in many ways.

How would expansion of the business fit in with your current job?

In expanding Pie Baby and trying to get if off the ground, we have fully committed ourselves to it full time.

As of the end of the academic year, I have left teaching. After more than 14 years of working with children on the fringes of mainstream learning, it is time for a change. However, through channelling our skills into making this business a success, we hope that in the future we will be able to offer on-the-job training and opportunities for young people to gain life skills in a real life context.

What are some examples of your vegan pies?

Our three flavours of vegan pies,  all topped with yummy garlicky mash, are:

El Fuego Bandida – Outlaw taste buds will love the revolutionary taste of this fiery chilli bean pie.

Cheesy Rider –  Indulge your cheesy cravings  with the satisfying and rebellious  taste of the triple carb  Mac’n’cheese pie.

The Stroganoff Molotov – Protest no more about flavourless food, this mushroom stroganoff taste explosion will make you stand up and take notice!

Are there any similar businesses in Bristol or is yours the only one dedicated to pies?

As far as I know, we will be the only fully vegan pie business in Bristol. There are a few other awesome vegan pie businesses around the country, but we would be Bristol’s first. We are 100 per cent vegan owned and operated, but we make pies that can be enjoyed by everyone.  Even the most enthusiastic carnivores enjoy and indulge in our pies.

We love that veganism is becoming more and more popular and we aim to reach as many people as we can to show just how good vegan food can be with the right recipe.

Where do you source your ingredients from?

We will be sourcing our ingredients locally as much as we can.  Being a start up business in a new city, we are still exploring all the amazing produce available through Bristol owned and operated suppliers.
