Italian restaurant to move into one of Bristol’s most historic buildings

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Apr 6, 2021

The boyhood home of poet Thomas Chatterton is to be the new location for an Italian restaurant moving from the other side of the city centre.

La Panza, currently located on Lower Park Row, is moving to the historic building on Redcliffe Way from April 13.

Formerly Chatterton’s Cafe and recently home to the pop-up LD’s Kitchen, the council-owned former school house dating from 1748 is incongruously marooned on a patch of grass between St Mary Redcliffe and the cobbles of Portwall Lane.

Before becoming a cafe in 2016, the council-owned building had been empty for 15 years since being a museum.

“We loved our old venue but we’re very excited to start this new chapter and to welcome you,” said the team, who opened their original restaurant in 2018.

La Panza describe themselves as a “rustic Italian trattoria… nothing fancy. Just genuine homemade Italian food, in a cosy and welcoming location.”

Their name will remain the same in their new location, with the team promising to put “the naughtiest Italian delicacies on the table”.

“Expect mouth-watering food, unexplored regional wines and seasonal menus. We just wanna share with you the food and culture we grew up to.”
