Jolly Hog team serve Christmas meals to Southmead Hospital staff

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Dec 9, 2020

The team from The Jolly Hog are due to serve more than 12,000 meals to the staff at Southmead Hospital this week after first feeding hospital workers during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the current restrictions in place due to the pandemic, North Bristol NHS Trust were unable to make their usual Christmas lunch for all employees, so The Jolly Hog have stepped up to the plate.

All this week, as Covid-19 vaccinations begin to be administered at Southmead, the team’s Airstream food van will be serving staff a pulled gammon bun with stuffing, cranberry and a pig in blanket; or a brie, cranberry and stuffing bun for vegetarians.

Befitting of the family-run business, co-owner Max Kohn’s mother-in-law and her friends have been baking special  Christmas desserts which will also be given free to hospital staff.

On Wednesday, the milestone of 30,000 meals donated is due to be hit with a big celebration planned on site at Southmead; while on Friday, Bristol Bears player Joe Joyce, who grew up in Southmead, will be helping to serve food.

The Jolly Hog’s Hannah Parkes said that the team “jumped at the chance” to help serve Christmas meals.

She said: “This enables us to give personal thanks to selfless individuals who have had a really tough year. This is the highlight of the year, a delicious Christmas meal which would usually be in the canteen, sat around a table with their colleagues, celebrating the highs and lows of the year behind them.”

“We wanted to ensure they still had a reason to be Jolly this Christmas, so we’re spreading the love the only way we know how – with Christmas specials of our most-loved dishes.”

First seen on the menu of Pigsty restaurant in Wapping Wharf and now for sale in supermarkets across the UK, all scotch egg sold continue to donate 5p from every sale to North Bristol NHS Trust.
