National recognition for much-loved chippy

By Aden Harris  Tuesday Oct 10, 2023

A fish and chip shop that is a favourite among locals has been announced as a top 40 finalist in the National Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year Awards 2024.

Bishopston Fish Bar has been serving the community for 13 years and has collected a number of accolades along the way, as well as a loyal customer base.

Owner Nick Lomvardos told Bristol24/7 he is “really chuffed” to be a finalist in the awards that acknowledge and champion businesses and individuals across the UK who make “outstanding contributions” to serving one of the nation’s most famous dishes.

The chippy, which is on Gloucester Road between Radnor Road and Longmead Avenue, has previously been an ‘area winner’ in the Independent Takeaway section of the awards and was placed among the top 20 in the UK in 2017.

Acknowledging the multiple awards that the fish bar has gained, one customer commented that it ‘”lives up to this reputation”.

The competition is judged by ‘a-fish-onados’  who put hopefuls through an extensive judging process, assessing everything from the quality of the fish and chips to the customer service and the sustainability of the business.

Andrew Crook, president at the National Federation of Fish Friers and organiser of the awards, said the calibre of entries this year has been “nothing short of fantastic”.

Crook added: “We’ve selected an exceptional shortlist that showcases the unwavering passion, dedication and excitement that the fish and chip industry brings to British culture.”

The category winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on February 28.
