New bakery set to open in St George

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Apr 30, 2021

There’s a bustle of activity inside a former pharmacy on Friday morning as the final touches are added to the newly transformed premises.

The Clouds Hill Road building that has stood empty for the best part of two years is set to reopen on Saturday as a new bakery from the team behind The Orchard Coffee Co, which is situated just a stone’s throw away.

“I’ve been eyeing it up for so long and felt it’s time for us to branch out,” says owner Joel Viljoen, pausing work to have a quick chat on the day before the business opens to the public.

Joel worked at The Orchard before taking it on himself at the end of 2019. The pandemic has forced the business to adapt fast and people queueing at the newly created hatch on Cherry Orchard Lane is now a common sight.

He says the struggles to get some of the supplies needed during lockdown was part of the reason for branching out and making baked goods in-house instead.

Joel Viljoen wants his new bakery to be in the heart of the community

“We just wanted to be at the heart of the community and providing good food,” says Joel, who says people in St George have been hugely supportive over the last year.

“It’s an artisan bakery, with our own bread, pastries, cakes and tray bakes – organic ingredients. We want to enable people to have the best products for the best price.”

There will also be what Joel describes as a “secret weapon” coming in mid-May, but he’s keeping details under wraps for now.

Most of the décor in the new bakery has been repurposed, with a long light over the main counter made from an old sheep trough.

The Orchard Bakery is due to open its doors for the first time at 9am on Saturday, May 1.
