New beer made from pie crust trimmings
A pie manufacturer and brewery have collaborated to create a carbon neutral beer made using pastry off-cuts.
Pie-oneer, a limited edition pale ale, has been brewed by Tapestry in St Philip’s Marsh using pie crust trimmings from the Pieminister factory in Brentry.
Brewed using British hops and water-efficient methods, Pie-oneer will be exclusively available at Pieminister’s restaurants on Stokes Croft and Broad Quay from January 7, with 10p from every can sold going to Props, a charity which supports adults with learning difficulties.
is needed now More than ever
Also collaborating on the project is GENeco in Avonmouth, who have helped to remove the carbon associated with beer production by using renewable energy produced by recycling inedible food waste.
Unavoidable food waste from Pieminister’s Bristol kitchens has already been used to produce renewable energy for five years.
GENeco head of waste & resources, Richard McCluskey, said that Pie-oneer “represents the collaboration we believe is required between businesses and organisations with shared sustainability values to reduce their impact on the environment and help achieve net zero climate goals”.
