New bottle shop and tap opening

By Martin Booth  Friday May 14, 2021

It’s been a long time coming for Emily Penney and Mike Fenlon, whose new bottle shop and taproom is opening soon after more than a year of delays.

Alpha Bottle Shop & Tap is finally set to open on Tuesday in the Imperial Arcade on East Street in Bedminster, with a huge selection of craft beers from both the UK and further afield.

The shop will provide 100 per cent refrigerated storage of all of their beers, with a web shop providing the option for people to click and collect in store, or orders can be shipped anywhere in the UK.

Emily and Mike also promise to provide a warm and welcoming space for onsite drinking, with guests able to enjoy a drink straight from the taps.

The opening of Alpha has been supported by the Love Our High Streets project from the West of England Combined Authority and Bedminster BID which aims to support new businesses on East Street.

Mike and Emily met while managing the Royal Navy Volunteer on King Street in 2015 and have been working towards owning and running their own business since then.

They left their latest roles at Left Handed Giant in March 2020 to open the venue, but the pandemic brought their plans to a temporary pause.

Now, however, is finally the time for that pause to end, with Mike saying that there is “a clear need for a business which merged the atmosphere of a craft beer bar with an epic selection of drinks from the best breweries and independent producers from around the globe”

Emily added: “It’s been a very long journey. From securing the perfect venue amidst a worldwide pandemic, to completing a full shop fit out.

“We’ve shed a few tears and had more than our fair share of ‘stress beers’ but we are so excited to finally be opening our doors and welcoming you in!”
