New cafe and bar brings speciality coffee and cocktails to Totterdown

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 22, 2021

It used to be a bank, then a cafe and bar, and now 107 Wells Road is a cafe and bar called Bank.

On Tuesday morning, Totterdown local, Michelin-starred chef Josh Eggleton, was one of the first through the door to this new arrival in the neighbourhood.

He had two flat whites to take away, chatting to another early customer while the drinks were expertly prepared by Bank owner Dan O’Regan.

Dan is a two-time UK Barista Championship finalist who previously worked as London wholesale manager and training manager for Origin, before moving to work in the wholesale business development team at Colonna in Wiltshire.

At Bank, Dan hopes to combine his passion for coffee with his love of craft beer and cocktails.

Three huge windows flood the high-ceilinged building – which was most recently Banco Lounge and originally a Lloyds bank – with natural light.

Leather-backed stools offer a view (if you sit in the ones nearest the door) over Arnos Vale and beyond, while there is also a large picnic table large enough to fit around a dozen people post-social distancing, and a trio of smaller tables around a leather banquette.

The coffee here is either espresso or filter, with all the beans used in the drinks able to buy in 250g bags.

Currently the house espresso is Dos Almas from Brazil roasted by Dan’s old colleagues at Origin in Cornwall, the guest espresso is Mandela from Colombia by Colonna and the guest filter is another Colombian, La Esmeralda roasted by Blossom in Manchester.

Among the beers is a particular emphasis on Bristol breweries, with three beers from Lost & Grounded in St Anne’s currently on tap and cans from Newtown Park in St Phillip’s and Wiper & True in St Werburgh’s in the fridge.

On display on Tuesday morning underneath the cocktail-making paraphernalia were a selection of pastries and cakes including a delicious lemon and pistachio slice.

You can bank on Bank for being a popular new addition to Totterdown.
