New cafe and bar Convivio opens on Cotham Hill

By Martin Booth  Monday Nov 27, 2017

“Would you like a tea or a coffee?” a waitress at Convivio asks a new customer dressed for the cold weather on a recent Saturday morning in hat, gloves and a scarf.

“No thank you,” she replies. “I’m only here to say hello. I live just down the road.”

Pleasantries over, she makes her way back outside, commenting on the wide width of the stairs on her way out.

Convivio used to be Deco Lounge for 12 years

This new cafe and bar on Cotham Hill occupies a prime position on Cotham Hill that until the beginning of this year had been Deco Lounge for 12 years.

It’s an intriguing chapter in the history of the Loungers chain, Bristol’s biggest food and drink success story of recent times which have only ever closed two Lounges during their rapid expansion across the country.

2017 may have been an unprecedented year for new openings, but it has also seen some high profile casualties – and the closure of Deco Lounge was one of the most surprising of all.

So Convivio has big boots to fill, and it’s attempting to fill them with much of the same all-day offering as a Lounge with a food menu of sharing boards, sandwiches, salads and burgers; breakfasts and brunches from £3.20 for a bacon sandwich to £7.55 for a full English; and beers on tap as well as a range of hot drinks.

Convivio is certainly convivial, but it will need more than just a warm welcome to succeed in these difficult times.
