New cocktail bar is second incarnation of former speakeasy

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Dec 1, 2021

A four-poster bed is pride of place within a new cocktail bar hidden in plain sight in Bristol city centre.

The bed – that can be transformed into banquette seating – is part of a boudoir-style area at Scarlet Lantern, the second incarnation of Red Light which previously occupied the same location.

The phone is still in place at its entrance on Unity Street but the graffiti which once covered the doorway has been removed.

There are also plans for the bar to soon have a second entrance on Frogmore Street opposite Sergio’s restaurant.

Scarlet Lantern owner Alistair Woods used to co-own Red Light with Richard Tring, with bottles from Tring’s new The Aperitivo Co. stocked on the back bar.

Keeping it in the family, much of the bar’s sumptuous new interior has been designed by Sarah Tring, Richard’s wife.

Alistair told Bristol24/7 that he hopes Scarlet Lantern will be “something different”.

“You come down the stairs and the first thing you see is a boudoir with a mahogany four-poster bed in. We’re a sexy bar but really just a high-end cocktail bar.”

The house cocktails at Scarlet Lantern all cost £10 with flavour notes for each one and names including In the Clouds, Dancing on the Ceiling, Forty Thieves and Back to Wonderland.

And of course there are also the classics available, with three different Old Fashioned drinks on the menu and a tantalising cheese toastie bar snack coming soon.
